Courtney Hodell is an editor and consultant with more than 30 years’ experience in developing, editing, and launching literary fiction and narrative nonfiction.

Courtney has held senior editorial positions in the US and the UK, including Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Random House, Fourth Estate, HarperCollins, and Viking Penguin.

She has worked on such award-winning and bestselling titles as The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese, The Yiddish Policemen’s Union and Moonglow by Michael Chabon, Source Code by Bill Gates, Who Knew by Barry Diller, The Liars’ Club, Cherry, and Lit by Mary Karr, The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund de Waal, Barbarian Days by William Finnegan, Lorne by Susan Morrison, and The Vanity Fair Diaries and The Palace Papers by Tina Brown.

Most recently Courtney was the longtime director of literary programs at the Whiting Foundation, where she oversaw the Whiting Awards and launched a nonfiction completion grant and a literary magazine prize. These programs brought millions of dollars to emerging talent, writers at work on complex, research-driven projects, and groundbreaking publications, freeing them to do extraordinary work. A significant number have gone on to garner the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the Booker Prize; MacArthur, Guggenheim, and NEA fellowships; and many other honors.
